Australia Question - Female Travel

Question

Is it dangerous to travel as a girl alone in Australia? - Ellen

Answer

Hi Ellen,

When I visited Australia for the first time in 2006, I didn’t really know what to expect. I had never travelled alone, never been to the other side of the world backpacking and hadn’t really thought about safety issues that you might have when travelling the world as  a girl.

I did hear from others that Australia was specifically suited for solo travellers, that is was an easy country to get around in and that hostels would be the best place to meet other backpackers. And they were right! I can honestly say that I never regretted one single day coming to Australia. I never felt unsafe or mistreated because I was a girl.

As you can see in the pictures here, I met loads of friendly guys, but enough girls that travelled solo as well!

Here are some tips that might help you travelling even more safely in Australia:

  • Find a hostel that offers girl only dormitories (most hostels have this option). You will meet other girls to travel with and sometimes it’s just nice to not wake up next to smelly boys feet.
  • Book a group tour, there are plenty of day trips and multi-day trips available, you don’t have to go everywhere on your own!
  • Especially at night, use your common sense and stay on the main roads and in touristy areas.
  • Choose a hostel on walking distance of mayor sights. If you choose a hostel that’s further away, check if they have a shuttle service into town.
  • Don’t be too cool to use a map; it saves you from getting lost and ending up in situations you might want to avoid.

I really hope you will enjoy your time in Australia. It’s one of the easiest and safest countries to travel in, especially when you’re a girl travelling alone!
